What the monthly fee usually includes
- The apartment, utilities and maintenance.
- Meals, often three a day, plus snacks.
- Housekeeping and laundry.
- Activities and scheduled transportation.
- Staff on site around the clock.
- A base level of help with daily tasks. More help usually costs more.
Why quotes vary so much
- Care level. Most communities charge base rent plus a care fee that rises with need. Some use points or tiers; others charge one all-inclusive rate. Ask which.
- Apartment size. A studio costs less than a one- or two-bedroom.
- Medication management is often an extra monthly charge.
- Second person. A couple usually pays a second-person fee.
- Community fee. Many charge a one-time move-in fee. Ask whether any part is refundable.
- Location. On both sides of State Line, newer buildings in high-demand suburbs tend to price higher.
Is it cheaper than staying home?
Add up the real cost of home: mortgage or rent, property tax, insurance, utilities, repairs, food, transportation, and any paid help. In 2025, 44 hours a week of home care had a median of $6,435 a month in Kansas and $6,292 in Missouri, more than the assisted living median in both states. Try our side-by-side cost comparison.
How families pay
Most families pay privately from income, savings and the sale of a home. Other sources: long-term care insurance, VA Aid and Attendance for eligible veterans and surviving spouses, and Medicaid waiver programs that may cover care services (not room and board) for people who qualify.
