What's available in Lenexa

Lenexa holds both ends of Johnson County's story: established neighborhoods on the north side and some of the fastest new growth in the metro — about 60,500 residents as of mid-2025, up 5.4 percent since 2020. Its housing mix is unusual for the county: only 56.8 percent of homes are owner-occupied, the lowest of the big Johnson County suburbs, which translates into far more apartment living. Independent living communities in particular have room to work with here.

Licensed care is close by and easy to check. KDADS' public facilities directory lists the communities holding assisted living licenses in Lenexa — Westchester Village, Hemsley House Assisted Living & Memory Care, and Homestead of Lenexa among them as of October 2026 — each entry with its inspection results attached. Look there first, then tour. And with roughly 2,600 veterans living in the city, VA Aid and Attendance is worth a conversation in a lot of Lenexa kitchens.

Help paying for it in Kansas

Kansas programs that help seniors pay for care

Medicaid in Kansas
Called KanCare. It covers nursing home care for people who qualify financially. Through the Frail Elderly (FE) waiver it can also pay for care and support at home — personal care, adult day care, a personal emergency response system, home safety changes and similar services — for Kansans 65 or older who meet a nursing-facility level of need. The FE waiver does not pay the monthly rent in assisted living.
Who qualifies
Age 65 or older, a nursing-facility level of need on the state's assessment, and financial eligibility decided by the KanCare Clearinghouse. Spouses who stay at home have protections.
Where to start
The statewide Aging and Disability Resource Center line, 1-855-200-2372, or the Johnson County Area Agency on Aging at 913-715-8861 for free options counseling. For planning questions — how the house, savings or a spouse's income interact — talk to a Kansas elder law attorney. We don't give legal or Medicaid-planning advice, and nobody should plan an asset transfer around eligibility on a website's word.
Veterans
VA Aid and Attendance pension. For wartime-era veterans and surviving spouses who meet VA's service, need and financial rules, it can add well over a thousand dollars a month — VA lists the maximum at $2,424 a month for a veteran alone and $2,874 with one dependent (rates effective December 1, 2025). We explain what the benefit is; we never file claims or charge for claims help. Free, accredited help filing: the Kansas Office of Veterans Services (kovs.ks.gov) or a veterans service organization.
Medicare
Does not pay for assisted living or long-term care. It covers short rehab stays after a qualifying hospital stay and some home health under conditions.

Medicaid follows residency.

Medicaid follows residency. If your parent moves from Lenexa to Missouri — or the reverse — the change matters more than the address suggests. Each state runs its own Medicaid program and its own waiver, and eligibility is generally judged where the person lives when they apply. Plan the state, then the community, with an elder law attorney if it's close.

Questions from Lenexa families

Lenexa has a lot of apartments. Does that help with senior living?

It helps with independent living especially. With well over half the city renting — 56.8 percent owner-occupied, lowest among the county's big suburbs — apartment-style senior communities fit how a lot of Lenexa residents already live. Assisted living is a different equation: what you're comparing there is care and staffing, not just the building.

How do I check a Lenexa community's record before touring?

KDADS' online facilities directory lists every licensed adult care home — Lenexa's include Westchester Village, Hemsley House and Homestead of Lenexa — with inspection results attached to each entry. It takes ten minutes and it's public. If reading survey reports isn't your thing, call us and we'll walk through what the records say.

Can we use Medicaid for any of this?

KanCare covers nursing home care for those who qualify, and the Frail Elderly waiver pays for in-home services for Kansans 65 or older at a nursing-facility level of need. Neither pays the monthly rent in assisted living. If the finances are close, a Kansas elder law attorney — not a website — should be the one planning around the house and savings.

We're comparing Lenexa to Shawnee. What actually differs?

Less than you'd think: same county, same licensing agency, same state median costs. What differs is location — drive time to family, doctors and church — and the individual communities themselves. Put two or three from each city side by side, inspection records included, and the right answer usually becomes obvious.
