In short
In Kansas, senior living communities are licensed by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS), and their inspection records are public. For help paying, KanCare — Kansas Medicaid — has a Home and Community Based Services Frail Elderly waiver for Kansans 65 and older, though a waitlist for new assessments began July 6, 2026. Your first free call is the Area Agency on Aging for your county (Johnson County: 913-715-8861). Call (800) 614-8388 for local options.
How senior care is licensed and checked in Kansas
Kansas groups assisted living facilities, nursing facilities, residential health care facilities and home-plus homes under one umbrella: "adult care homes," licensed by KDADS. The state requires at least one unannounced inspection of every adult care home within 15 months of the last one, and it requires each facility to keep its most recent inspection report on site and give you a copy on request. You can also look a community up in the KDADS online facility directory before you ever visit, and ask a community for its last two reports.
Paying for care in Kansas
KanCare is Kansas Medicaid. For long-term care at home, the state offers Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) waivers, including the Frail Elderly (FE) waiver for people 65 and older who meet the Medicaid nursing-facility level of care and the financial rules. Services can include personal care, adult day care, home modifications and more. To apply, contact the Aging and Disability Resource Center at 1-855-200-2372, which will set up options counseling and a functional assessment.
One important note for families: as of July 6, 2026, KDADS put new FE waiver assessments on a waitlist because demand has outpaced funding, with a crisis exception for urgent cases. That doesn't change your eligibility — it means you should start the process early rather than waiting for a crisis. And a reminder we repeat everywhere: we explain programs but we don't advise on shifting assets to qualify. For anything involving the house or savings, talk to the Area Agency on Aging and a licensed elder law attorney.

Questions about Kansas
Who licenses assisted living in Kansas?
KDADS (the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services) licenses assisted living facilities as one category of "adult care home." Nursing facilities are licensed under the same umbrella but provide a higher level of skilled care.
How do I see a community's inspection record?
Ask the community for its most recent inspection report — Kansas law requires it to give you a copy on request — and look the facility up in the KDADS online facility directory. Read the last two reports and any complaint findings.
Does KanCare pay for assisted living?
KanCare (Kansas Medicaid) can help pay for care services for people who qualify financially and functionally, most often through Home and Community Based Services waivers rather than by paying an assisted living rent directly. Start with the Aging and Disability Resource Center at 1-855-200-2372. The Frail Elderly waiver has had a waitlist since July 2026.
Where do I start if I don't know what I need?
Call the Area Agency on Aging for your county — Johnson County's is 913-715-8861 — or call us at (800) 614-8388. Either can help you figure out the first step without any obligation.
