What makes one quote higher than another

  • Level of care. Most assisted living communities charge base rent plus a care fee that rises with the help a person needs.
  • Room type. A private room or larger apartment costs more than a shared or studio unit.
  • Dementia care. Secured memory care and specialized staff usually add to the monthly price.
  • Hours. Home care is billed by the hour, so the total depends on how many hours a week you need.
  • Location and age of the building. Newer buildings in high-demand suburbs tend to price higher.

What these numbers do not include

The CareScout survey does not publish separate figures for memory care, independent living, senior move managers, estate sales or home modifications, so we do not print numbers for those. Their cost pages explain what goes into the price and how to get honest quotes instead.

Questions families ask

How much does senior living cost per month in Kansas?

The 2025 median was $5,975 a month for assisted living, $8,669 for a semi-private nursing home room and $6,435 for 44 hours a week of in-home care (CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025).

How much does senior living cost per month in Missouri?

The 2025 median was $5,400 a month for assisted living, $6,741 for a semi-private nursing home room and $6,292 for 44 hours a week of in-home care (CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025).

Does Medicare pay for any of this?

Medicare does not pay for long-term custodial care such as assisted living or ongoing help at home. It can cover short stays in a skilled nursing facility and part-time home health care when strict conditions are met. See paying for care.

Why is your number different from a community's quote?

A median is a midpoint across many providers. A real quote depends on the apartment, the care level and what is included. Always ask for the all-in monthly figure.
