In the CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025, the median cost of a shared (semi-private) nursing home room was $8,669 a month in Kansas and $6,741 in Missouri, against $9,581 nationally. What's included

Nursing home rates usually cover the room, meals, nursing care, help with daily activities, and activities. Some therapy, medications and supplies may be billed separately, often to insurance. Ask each home for a written list.

How families pay

  • Medicare: covers up to 100 days of skilled nursing care per benefit period after a qualifying 3-day inpatient hospital stay. In 2026, days 1 to 20 cost $0 and days 21 to 100 cost up to $217 a day. It doesn't pay for long-term custodial care. See Medicare and nursing homes.
  • Medicaid: KanCare in Kansas and MO HealthNet in Missouri pay for long-term nursing home care for people who meet medical and financial rules.
  • Private pay: savings, income, home sale proceeds.
  • Long-term care insurance, if your parent has a policy.
  • VA: eligible veterans may get nursing home care through the VA or a state veterans home. See veterans' care.
