VA benefits for assisted living: what helps a veteran pay

The VA usually doesn't pay an assisted living community's rent directly. But several VA benefits can put real money toward it. Here's how veterans and surviving spouses in the Kansas City area use them.

Quick answer

The VA generally doesn't pay for assisted living rent and meals directly. The main way veterans pay for it is a VA pension with Aid and Attendance, a monthly payment the veteran or surviving spouse can use toward the cost. For 2026 the maximum annual rate with Aid and Attendance is $29,093 for a veteran with no dependents. Some veterans also qualify for VA health care services at home or in VA nursing care. How Aid and Attendance helps

The pension is paid to the veteran or survivor, not the community, so they can use it toward assisted living. The VA can count unreimbursed medical expenses, which may include care costs, when it figures countable income. That can make a bigger payment possible once care costs start. What the VA does pay for directly

  • VA community living centers and state veterans homes provide nursing home care for eligible veterans. See veterans homes.
  • Home and community-based services for enrolled veterans who need them, such as home health aides, adult day health and respite care.
  • Medical foster homes in some areas.

Ask the VA medical center's social work team what your parent qualifies for.

Cost of assisted living in the Kansas City area

In 2025 the median was $5,975 a month in Kansas and $5,400 in Missouri (CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025). A VA pension rarely covers all of it, so families often combine it with income, savings and the sale of a home.

Questions families ask

Does the VA pay for assisted living?

Not directly in most cases. A VA pension with Aid and Attendance pays the veteran or survivor monthly, and they can use it toward assisted living.

Can a veteran's spouse get help with assisted living?

A surviving spouse may qualify for the Survivors Pension with Aid and Attendance. A living spouse of an eligible veteran may count as a dependent for the veteran's pension.

What's the difference between a veterans home and assisted living?

State veterans homes and VA community living centers mostly provide nursing home level care for eligible veterans. Assisted living is a private community with daily help.
