Overview
VA Aid and Attendance pension. For wartime-era veterans and surviving spouses who meet VA's service, need and financial rules, it can add well over a thousand dollars a month, VA lists the maximum at $2,424 a month for a veteran alone and $2,874 with one dependent (rates effective December 1, 2025). We explain what the benefit is; we never file claims or charge for claims help. Free, accredited help filing: the Kansas Office of Veterans Services (kovs.ks.gov) or a veterans service organization.

How to apply

You do not need to pay anyone to file a VA claim. Accredited Veterans Service Officers (VSOs) do the work for free. In Kansas, the Kansas Office of Veterans Services places VSOs in every region of the state: call 1-800-513-7731 or visit kovs.ks.gov to find the office nearest you.

Bring a copy of the DD-214 (or other discharge papers), marriage and death certificates if applicable, and a list of income and assets. The VSO will submit the application and represent you through the process at no cost.

Medical requirement

Aid and Attendance requires a need for help with daily activities — bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, transferring, or managing medications. A doctor's statement is part of the application. The benefit can be used for assisted living, care at home, or a nursing home.

VA vs. Medicaid

You can receive VA Aid and Attendance and KanCare at the same time, if you qualify for both. The VA pension counts as income for Medicaid purposes, so the math matters. A Kansas elder law attorney or an accredited VSO can help you plan. We do not give legal advice; we help you find the right expert.
