Quick answer

No. Medicare does not pay for assisted living, because it doesn't cover long-term custodial care: help with bathing, dressing, meals and other daily tasks, or the rent. Medicare still covers your parent's medical care while they live there, such as doctor visits, hospital stays, prescriptions under Part D, and home health visits when they qualify. To pay for assisted living, families use private funds, long-term care insurance, VA benefits or Medicaid waivers. [(800) 614-8388](tel:+18006148388) to talk it through.

## What Medicare won't pay for in assisted living

- Monthly rent and meals.
- Help with bathing, dressing, eating and using the bathroom.
- Medication management fees charged by the community.
- Supervision or memory care.

Medicare.gov says Medicare and most health insurance, including Medigap, don't pay for long-term care services.

## What Medicare still covers while your parent lives there

- Doctor visits, tests and hospital care (Part A and Part B).
- Prescription drugs, through a Part D plan or Medicare Advantage plan.
- **Home health care** in the apartment: part-time skilled nursing or therapy when a doctor orders it and your parent is homebound. See [Medicare and home health](https://seniortransitionassistance.com/help/paying-for-it/medicare-home-health/).
- A short **skilled nursing facility** stay after a qualifying hospital stay. See [Medicare and nursing homes](https://seniortransitionassistance.com/help/paying-for-it/medicare-nursing-home/).
- Hospice care, which can be provided in assisted living.

## Does Medicare Advantage pay for assisted living?

Medicare Advantage plans follow the same rule: they don't pay for assisted living rent or long-term custodial care. Some plans offer limited extra benefits, such as a few hours of in-home support. Check your parent's plan documents or call the plan.

## What pays for assisted living instead

| Medicaid waivers | May pay for care services (not room and board) for people who qualify. See [Medicaid and assisted living](https://seniortransitionassistance.com/help/paying-for-it/medicaid-assisted-living/). |

For scale: the 2025 median cost of assisted living was $5,975 a month in Kansas and $5,400 in Missouri (CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025).
