Downsizing and moving

# Helping a parent transition to assisted living

The move itself is one day. Settling in can take weeks or months. Here's how families make the transition easier, for their parent and themselves.

Quick answer

To help a parent transition to assisted living, involve them in decisions, set up the room with familiar things, visit often in the first weeks, get to know the staff, and expect ups and downs. Many people feel sad, angry or anxious at first. Talk with staff if your parent isn't eating, sleeping or joining in after a while. [(800) 614-8388](tel:+18006148388) if you'd like to talk it through.

## Before the move

- Talk about the move honestly and early, focusing on what your parent will gain.
- Let your parent choose what to bring and how to arrange the room.
- Visit together for a meal or activity first.
- Share your parent's history, routine and likes with staff.

## The first weeks

- Make the room feel like home before or on move-in day.
- Visit often at first, but let staff and new friends fill the day too.
- Join an activity or meal together.
- Keep visits upbeat; save hard conversations for when things settle.
- Expect some calls asking to go home. Listen, reassure, and talk with staff.

## Common feelings, and what helps

| Feeling | What helps |
|---|---|
| Grief for the old home | Talk about it; bring meaningful things |
| Loneliness | Ask staff to introduce your parent to residents with shared interests |
| Anger at family | Stay calm and consistent; it often eases with time |
| Guilt (yours) | Remember why you chose this; ask for support |

## When to ask for help

Talk to the care team if your parent stops eating, sleeps much more, withdraws or seems more confused. A doctor visit may help rule out other causes. If the community isn't the right fit, it's okay to look again.

## Look after yourself

The move is hard on families too. Caregiver support groups and your Area Agency on Aging can help.

## Questions families ask

### How long does it take to adjust to assisted living?

It's different for everyone. Some settle in within weeks; others take a few months.

### Should I visit every day at first?

Visit often, but leave room for your parent to join activities and make friends.

### What if my parent keeps asking to go home?

It's common early on. Reassure, redirect and talk with staff about what helps.

### What if it's not the right place?

Talk to the staff first. If it still isn't working, it's okay to look at other options.
