What it costs

# How much does a walk-in tub cost?

A walk-in tub can make bathing safer and more comfortable, but the installed price is often much more than the tub alone. Here's what goes into it.

Quick answer

A walk-in tub's total cost includes the tub, removal of the old tub, installation, plumbing and electrical work, and sometimes a larger water heater. Features like jets and heated seats add more. We don't publish price ranges because we haven't found a reliable public source. Medicare generally doesn't pay for walk-in tubs. A step-in shower with grab bars and a seat is often a simpler option. ## What goes into the price

- The tub: size, material, door style.
- Features: whirlpool or air jets, heated seat, quick drain.
- Removing the old tub and repairing walls and floors.
- Plumbing and, for jetted tubs, electrical work.
- A bigger or faster water heater, since walk-in tubs hold a lot of water.
- Permits.

## Things to think about first

- Your parent has to sit inside while the tub fills and drains. Ask how long each takes.
- Getting in still means stepping over a threshold.
- An occupational therapist can suggest whether a tub or shower suits your parent best.

## Alternatives that may cost less

- A low-threshold or roll-in shower.
- Grab bars, a shower chair and a handheld shower head.
- A tub transfer bench.

See our [care at home guides](https://seniortransitionassistance.com/help/care-at-home/) for more on safety.

## Ways to help pay

- **Medicare:** generally doesn't cover walk-in tubs; its equipment reference list denies bathtub lifts and seats as convenience items. A Medicare Advantage plan may offer extra home-safety benefits; check the plan.
- **VA:** veterans with certain service-connected disabilities may qualify for housing adaptation grants. See [veterans' benefits](https://seniortransitionassistance.com/veterans/).
- **Taxes:** IRS Publication 502 lists modifications to bathrooms among improvements that may count as medical expenses when the main purpose is medical care. Ask a tax professional.
- **Medicaid waivers and local programs:** Kansas's Frail Elderly waiver lists home and environmental modification among its services for people who qualify. Ask your Area Agency on Aging about other help.
