# How much does independent living cost?

Independent living prices vary a lot by community, apartment size and what's included. Here's how to compare them fairly, and against what staying home really costs.

Independent living is usually priced as a monthly fee that bundles rent with services such as meals, housekeeping, utilities, activities and transportation. The national Cost of Care survey we use doesn't publish an independent living figure, so we don't quote an average. Ask each community for a written price list and compare what's included. ## What the monthly fee often covers

- Apartment rent and utilities, sometimes internet or cable.
- One to three meals a day.
- Housekeeping and linen service.
- Activities, outings and fitness.
- Scheduled transportation.
- Maintenance and grounds.

What's included differs by community, so line them up side by side.

## Extra charges to ask about

- Community or move-in fee, and whether it's refundable.
- Second-person fee for couples.
- Pet fee.
- Parking or garage.
- Extra meals, guest meals.
- Personal care or medication help, if offered, often from a separate agency.

## Compare with staying home

Add up a month of staying home: mortgage or rent, property taxes, insurance, utilities, repairs, yard and snow, groceries, transportation and any paid help. Compare that total with the community's all-in fee.

## If care is needed

Independent living doesn't include daily personal care. ### How much does independent living cost per month?

It depends on the community, apartment and services. We don't quote an average because the survey we use doesn't cover independent living. Get written price lists.

### Is independent living cheaper than assisted living?

Usually, because it doesn't include personal care.

### Does Medicare pay for independent living?

No. Independent living is usually paid privately.

### Do you have to buy in?
